Yes, that’s a long title.
But a rant entered my mind this morning.
I was in a flow of energy around clients who want to write books. And clients who want to publish books through Author & Beyond publishing coaching in 2019.
But they’re not getting around to it.
Because they are scared or don’t know where to start or don’t have the expertise or the time or the support or…
Something.
Something keeps you from doing what your heart dreams.
Usually fear.
And there’s an empowering antidote.
Do what you hate first.
It’s not that you hate it so much as you resist it.
Wherever your resistance is highest, do that first in your work day.
As a personal trainer for 15 years, I loved to ask my clients loaded questions. Ones that helped me to best help them without their resistance getting in the way. And one of those questions was: do you prefer weights or cardio?
Because one was always more enjoyable than the other. And despite whatever the popular exercise science of the day said about cardio or strength first, it was more important that my clients learned to master their resistance.
So, when they answered the question — always innocently assuming I would cater to their preference — I began their workout with what they resisted most.
Because if you enjoy weights, it’s easy to run out of time for cardio. And vice versa.
But when we dance with resistance; when we meet it and move past it, again and again, our mindset changes and we gain a great sense of empowerment.
You will always find something else to do and eventually run out of time to complete the one task that will change you the most.
Why will it change you?
Because you will learn to master resistance. And that’s huge on its own.
But this habit will also change your life. Because you will be doing something that otherwise doesn’t get done.
So if you struggle to call on clients, and you begin making that a priority of your day… your business may grow 10-fold!
If you write an hour a day… at least one book will be complete by year’s end… or a multitude of blog posts that help you reach more people.
If you take time for yourself and your health each day… perhaps prepping healthy meals, 20 minutes of meditation, an hour of yoga, a hot shower or salt bath, or a cup of herbal tea and a few moments of deep breathing… self-care becomes centre stage and your wellbeing improves.
If you make your bed and tidy your kitchen before you begin your work day, you come home to a welcoming environment and your energy changes.
Life changes.
You change.
I have a plan for my upcoming books. I have 3 that are all at various stages of completion. I plan to release them close together. In order to do that, I need to ensure I meet certain goals.
The first manuscript is in editing. It will take a month. In order to have manuscript number 2 ready for my editor at month’s end, I have to revise it. I took the word count and divided by the number of days I plan to commit to it (weekends off, because quality time with family is important to me too). I came up with 3,000 words per day to meet my goal. I timed that number on day 1 and it takes me right around an hour. Perfect.
However, it’s easy to jump into client manuscript reviews, coaching calls, marketing, the laundry or even Facebook.
If I start with everything else, chances are, I won’t get my revisions in. If I start with revisions, I always find everything else gets done.
It’s all about the level of resistance.
So look at the thing(s) you are resisting most right now. And mark that as your number 1 task in the day.
Make it a priority.
It will change your life.
As Yogi Bhajan said in the 5 Sutras of the Aquarian Age, “When the time is on you, start, and the pressure will be off.”
What are you resisting?
