A friend mentioned visiting her parent’s retirement community and each person was introduced to her, followed by their medical condition.
I laughed. I guess it’s the equivalent of being introduced by your career in your 30s?
She remarked how she never wanted to focus identity on illness.
That’s a contemplation I’ve known for decades. It seems I release one health issue to discover the next one in line. And I’ve discovered some fascinating perspectives on health along the way.
Well, the issue du jour is osteoporosis.
That was never on my mind at age 54.
Out of the blue, earlier this year, one of my toes swelled up. My GP took a couple looks at it and said, “We don’t do much for toes.”
Fair enough, but I consider each toe, finger, organ, etc., a member of the family and when one of them is under the weather, I like to find out why.
As I continued to mention the oddness of the lone swollen toe, my daughter commented, “If only there was a doctor who specialized in feet.”
Smart ass. Literally. I hadn’t thought to see a podiatrist, so off I went.
Reviewing the foot x-ray with him, he said, “Your bones are quite grey on the imaging. There should be more white area.”

And off I went again, this time for a DEXA scan. Diagnosis: Osteoporosis.
Thank you, swollen toe, for initiating a series of events that led me to an important finding.
I’m discovering a wealth of information and insight into all-things-bones and I plan to share those with you, dear reader, over the course of a month in bone-loving blog posts.
Then you, too, may benefit from the wisdom I gather.
I will take a holistic approach and explore body, mind and spirit practices, look at traditional therapies, nourishing herbals, what TCM and Ayurveda have to say about it, how menopause and undiagnosed health conditions play their part, and my own lived experience as I build nourishing protocols for bone health.
If you have questions you’d like to explore answers to, please post them in the comments and I will add them to my list of topics over this next month.
I appreciate you being here and walking this journey with me. Heads-up: There will probably be squats and lunges along the way 😉
Much love,
Stephanie
