The top 10 topical treatments for lichen sclerosus

The vulva care market is exploding. If we ever thought women’s health wasn’t getting enough attention (it still has a ways to go), many products have popped onto the scene with solutions for vulva care.

I thought I’d have some fun today and take a look at this emerging market. I’m not talking about the prescribed topical steroid creams/ointments for LS. I covered that in What is the treatment for lichen sclerosus? I’m talking about the balms, salves, oils, blends and boosters for your lady bits.

So, what are the top 10 topicals for LS?

In the book Lichen Sclerosus: Body, Mind & Spirit Practices to Heal the Stress of LS (now also available in Italian and Dutch), I talk about the important role of using a barrier cream with LS. There are topicals to relieve itch and irritation, some to soothe rawness and fissures, and some to protect the skin. Many of the products take on the role of all 3.

I have not tried all of these listed below personally. I’m currently using a bit of jojoba oil mixed with a nice pomegranate seed oil I found at my local health food store. And some of these companies just don’t ship to Canada yet.

These products run the gamut in price. The vulva-care world is your oyster. You don’t have to spend a fortune though to find an effective topical for you. While I list what some are using for their LS, many find good ol’ coconut oil, castor oil or olive oil work like a charm. And as I said in my book, my pelvic floor therapist likes Cerave®. There’s no right or wrong here. Just what’s right for you!

I am certain there will be many updates to this list, however, here is what’s popular today (in no particular order):

  • Emuaid® First Aid Ointment
  • Julva® from Dr. Anna Cabeca
  • Perrin Naturals
  • Silky Peach Cream by Parlor Games
  • Vmagic Vulvar Care
  • Lisepten™ from Cloverleaf Farm
  • Aquaphor from Eucerin
  • Miss Bud’s Hemp Feminine Balm
  • Soothe My skin by Emu joy
  • YES VM Vaginal Moisturizer

Find something that fits into your budget and works for your skin. Many with LS find it effective to rotate topicals: using one for 4 -6 weeks and then switching to another.

If you’ve tried or are currently using any of the above (or have any to add to the list), I’d love to hear what you think of them. Comment below to let me know. Or, if you’re having great success with something simpler, like coconut oil, I’d love to hear.

All the best to you and your vulva.

Much love,

Stephanie

  1. The best thing I have found for lichen sclerosus is Desitin. I get a generic from Kroger and it is the best by far. It takes away the itching and the pain. I don’t even have to use it everyday. Sometimes once a week is all I need. I hope this works as well for you as it does for me.
